P and her Mom’s Story
P was born a micro preemie and lives in a family shelter with her mother. Along with her hearing loss, she has ongoing health issues related to her lungs, congestion and is very susceptible to colds. There have been numerous hospital stays after discharge. P is now almost 3 years old.
One of the services P receives is auditory skills intervention, which is the development and maximizing of listening skills for children with hearing loss. A big component is for the parent to learn and understand how to provide an optimal hearing environment for their child.
P’s mother only had a phone, making attending this service challenging. Through the support of Surrey Place, mom was able to purchase an iPad and iPad protector. Even when P was ill or unable to travel, mom used her iPad to continue learning the skills that help her child develop speech and hearing skills.
Mo’s Story
Mo faces several medical and physical challenges, including cerebral palsy with spastic quadriplegia and osteoporosis. With limited mobility, he relies on a trusted adult to move him around in his wheelchair. Through a private clinic in the city, the family was introduced to the Trexo Robotics Gait Trainer, a device that essentially functions as robotic legs. The first time Mo used the device, he lit up with excitement. His parents were amazed by the increased movement it allowed and began to envision how this technology could transform Mo’s life.
However, Mo was soon going to outgrow the largest size available at the therapy center, and no agencies in Canada offered a larger model. The only option was to purchase a device for home use, but the cost was beyond what the family could afford. With support from the Surrey Place Client Needs Fund, the family reached their fundraising goal and were able to purchase Mo’s very own Trexo Gait Trainer.
Now, Mo can continue improving his flexibility, mobility and strength, significantly enhancing his quality of life and giving the family hope for a more active and independent future.
Hear about our Symphonic Passion Chorus from Members and Staff
The Symphonic Passion Chorus is important because it’s like a community. People who have a wide range of disabilities come together to sing. It’s a safe space where friendships are made and there is acceptance. Week after week, it’s something the choir members look forward to attending.
Watching friends coming together and greeting each other with so much enthusiasm—this is what the choir is all about. For me, the choir has been uplifting. As weeks go by, the excitement for the big concert is pretty fun to witness and be a part of. I enjoy the interaction and to have a choir, such as this, where everyone is accepted is pretty amazing!” — Sarah Flint, Choir Member & Lived Experience Advisor.
“The choir has such a powerful impact on the lives of our clients. For many members, they have always loved to sing but never been able to access a choir in the community. Witnessing the magic that happens when barriers are removed, and watching our clients learn challenging music and perform it with skill and joy at the final concert, is something I feel privileged to witness every year.”
— Ana Santo, Surrey Place Clinician & Choir Director
Dee’s Story
A family new to Canada, with one child, Dee, who has special needs and is a client of Surrey Place, struggled to manage their bills, leaving no extra money for items essential to their child’s development. Dee, who required support for fine motor skills, often shifted between standing and sitting positions at a coffee table during activities. Without a child-sized table, chair or booster seat, he frequently brought activities to the floor, eventually giving up due to discomfort. At the dining table, sitting on an adult chair made it difficult for him to manipulate utensils and food, so he needed to be fed by an adult.
Through the support of Surrey Place, Dee was able to receive a child-sized table, chairs, and a booster seat. With the right fit, Dee began to stay at the table much longer for his creative activities, showing more willingness to engage in fine motor exercises. His siblings also started connecting with him by sitting at the same table and participating in similar activities. With the booster seat at the dining table, he could finally see his entire family while eating, and he learned to manipulate food and utensils on his own. This change has significantly impacted his self-help skills, fine motor development, eye-hand coordination, communication, and social skills, allowing him to grow and thrive in ways that were previously challenging.

Symphonic Passion Chorus
The Symphonic Passion Chorus is a group of 25-30 participants of Surrey Place who spread the power of joy through song during the winter season. Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Down syndrome, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and other intellectual or developmental disabilities are all welcome to join. The choir runs from September to December every year. The choir encourages people who love to sing to gain a sense of belonging, and no musical experience is necessary. Using a combination of pictorial symbols and words, our team of clinical staff, volunteers and accompanists make the singing experience accessible.
Donations to the Chorus ensure all elements of the Chorus can take place, like hiring musicians, hosting the yearly December concert and renting equipment.
Treasure Chest
The Treasure Chest is aimed at encouraging learning and development for clients from the ages of 0-17. The purpose is to remove some of the financial barriers in introducing clinically appropriate toys or equipment that will encourage the achievement of identified developmental or behavioral milestones as determined by the child’s clinical team. The Treasure Chest allows clinicians to request necessary toys or equipment to facilitate and promote the parent’s skills as the primary educators of their children.
Examples include:
- Table-top activities to promote fine motor skills & school readiness – matching games, cause & effect toys, puzzles, lacing sets, counting & sorting puzzles, magnet letters, specialty scissors, blocks, arts & crafts materials
- Behaviour reduction tools & Occupational Therapy needs – sensory toys, fidget toys, deep pressure vests, & weighted blankets
Client Needs Fund
The Client Needs Fund was established by the Surrey Place Charitable Foundation in 2003 from the generosity of our donors. The goal of the Client Needs Fund is to provide urgent, one-time financial assistance to clients with specific economic challenges related to their diagnosis or disability. Surrey Place clinicians can request funding on the behalf of clients for specific equipment, items, or services which will enhance a client’s independence and quality of life.
Examples Include:
- Communication Devices prescribed by Speech & Language therapists
- Items and Equipment to enhance Client safety – fitted helmets, Personal Protective Equipment for caregivers (Kevlar gloves, arm padding etc.), specialized car seats or strollers, safety gates, window locks
